Hugo Eligible Comics

The lovely folks at Lady Business invited me to come by and talk about some of the comics eligible for Best Graphic Story at this year's Hugo Awards, so that's where I'm at today. Y'all should stop by and see my top 10 comics released in 2014, complete with commentary and some hopefully-not-too-confusing stuff about what makes something a potential Best Graphic Story nominee.

Be sure to check out Lady Business's other Hugos coverage, too. They're big proponents of the award. Hell, they're the whole reason I got involved in the first place. It's mighty tough to resist their enthusiasm for promoting great SFF and making the genre a more inclusive place.

The Sunday Salon: The Hugo Awards and Me

I strongly suspect I'm too shy (and/or anxiety-ridden) for SFF conventions. That thing you're supposed to do, where you jump into conversations and thus meet all sorts of fascinating people? I can't do that. It ain't how I'm built. I'm quite happy to talk to people who jump into any conversations I'm already be involved with, but I can't do it my own self.

That said, I do long to be the sort of person who can attend (and enjoy) conventions¹, so I often look at con websites and dream big. While most of the membership categories are straightforward, supporting memberships have always puzzled me. I couldn't imagine why someone would want to shell out cash for a convention they wouldn't even attend. Why not save your money for the day when you can go?

Now I get it.

I can't speak to the smaller cons, but a supporting membership to WorldCon gives you the right to nominate and vote for the Hugo Awards--a compelling reason indeed.

Which is why I bought one this year, at Renay's urging.

And it's been a blast.
