Readathon Mini Challenge: Picture It

The mini challenge is now closed. Thank you to everyone who participated! Y'all shared some great images.

Congrats, too, to Avery, who won the prize!

Hello, Readathon participants! Ready for a teeny tiny reading break?

Unless you've chosen to focus on scriptless comics, you've spent the last five hours immersed in words, words, words. Now that Hour 6 is upon us, I'd like you to step away from words long enough to find a picture that somehow relates to your current read. If images aren't accessible for you, you can find a piece of music instead.

Choose an image (or song) that makes you think of the main character, an important plot point, the book's theme, the setting, or any other story-related element that triggers your imagination. I ask that you don't use cover or interior art or a still from a film adaptation because that's just too easy, but anything else is fair game.

Please make sure your selection is free and legal to use, and be sure to credit the artist, photographer, or musician. Flickr's creative commons archive is a great place to search for images in the public domain, as is the WANA Commons. Make sure you set parameters for each search, or Flickr will return plenty of non-creative commons images as well. You can also snap (or draw) a quick picture your own self, if you've got the right inspiration laying around.

Once you've made your choice, tell us how it relates to your book via a blog post, tweet, or Instagram post. If you don't use social media (or if you're too focused on reading to worry about crap like that), you can post your explanation and a link to your selection in the comments here.

An example: I've been working my way through SKIP BEAT, a manga by Yoshiki Nakamura. The main character, Kyoko, wants to succeed in showbiz but has to prove herself before she can land a prime gigs. One of Kyoko's jobs involves dressing up in a chicken suit to provide comic relief for a variety show, so I hunted around and found a picture of a person in a chicken costume:

Image of a person dressed in a full-body chicken suit. It's made of shaggy yellow material with a red foam comb and jowls. The person holds a brochure and stands on a residential street with what appear to be storage sheds and a white apartment building in the background.

Now it's your turn! Find a picture or song and tweet it to me (@xicanti), tag me on Instagram (@xicanti), or leave a comment below, and make sure I have some way to contact you if you win. One randomly selected participant will win a set of ten vintage postcards from the Canadian Rockies, plus 50 cancelled Canadian stamps (and a couple American stamps) with fancy-dancy pictures on 'em.

A loose pile of ten vintage postcards in predominantly green and blue tones, plus a clear baggie filled with cancelled stamps. A Superman stamp is prominently visible.

If you win and a visual prize like this is meaningless to you due to accessibility issues, we'll work something else out.

I'll contact the winner during Hour 9, so you've got three hours to get your entry in!

  28. I have chosen the song The Devil Within by Digital Daggers. After finishing the book Legend by Marie Lu I couldn't stop thinking about this song. It symbolizes perfectly how Day creeps into June's heart. Or how the Republic brainwashes everybody and creeps into their very existance. It's just so weird that a government like this can exist, and I couldn't get this song out of my head.
